Fans of Critical Role Productions’ hit adult animated fantasy television series The Legend of Vox Machina are all asking the same question: where is season three?
The show was renewed for its third season long before season two had premiered, but a long silence on the release of season three has Critters worldwide holding their breath.
What Is The Legend Of Vox Machina?
The Legend of Vox Machina premiered on Prime Video on January 28th 2022, based on the first campaign of the popular American Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role. Veteran game master Matthew Mercer acts as Dungeon Master in Critical Role and creates daring and hilarious fantasy adventures alongside a talented cast of friends and fellow voice actors.
The show follows a group of seven unlikely heroes and their adventures in the fictional continent of Tal’Dorei in the world of Exandria. Known for their unconventional, rough-and-ready approach, the band of mercenaries cause chaos at every turn, donning the catchphrase 'Vox Machina, f**k s**t up!'
Built on the culmination of years of support from a dedicated fanbase, the first ten episodes of the show were funded by a highly successful Kickstarter campaign.

Season Three Cast & Characters
So, The Legend of Vox Machina season three is on the way, but who’s in it?
The cast of Critical Role are a group of voice actors and long-time friends who you’re likely to have heard in some of your favourite animated series’, such as Ben 10, Attack on Titan, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, One Piece, Teen Titans, Fullmetal Alchemist, Transformers, Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Demon Slayer and many more!
You may also have heard their voices in a variety of video games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, League of Legends, Overwatch 2 and The Last of Us Part II.
We expect the main cast to reprise their roles in season three:
Taliesin Jaffe as Percival "Percy" Fredrickstein Von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III
Ashley Johnson as Pike Trickfoot
Travis Willingham as Grog Strongjaw
Sam Riegel as Scanlan Shorthalt
Marisha Ray as Keyleth of the Air Ashari
Liam O'Brien as Vax'ildan "Vax" Vessar
Laura Bailey as Vex'ahlia "Vex" Vessar
And let’s not forget Matthew Mercer, who appeared in the first two seasons of the show in a variety of cameo roles, such as Lord Sylas Briarwood, Umbrasyl, Craven Edge and even Vex’s bear companion Trinket! The Dungeon Master voiced the full range of NPCs in the podcast, so we can expect him to continue bringing life to many of the characters who appear on-screen.
Several well-known voice actors have also appeared in the show so far as recurring and guest characters, such as David Tennant (Dr Who; Jessica Jones), Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn 99; Encanto), Billy Boyd (The Lord of the Rings) and the late Lance Reddick (The Wire; Fringe). It is currently unknown which guest stars will appear in season three.
When Are We Expecting Season Three?

Based on the release dates of seasons one and two, Critical Role fans thought they had a pretty good idea of when The Legend of Vox Machina season three would release, but the silence on the topic has been a source of surprise for many.
Here’s a timeline of some key events so far:

Since seasons one and two premiered in January 2022 and January 2023 respectively, January 2024 was widely anticipated to yield the release season three. However, January came and went with no trailer or release date in sight, and the global Critter community have been anxiously anticipating news of season three since.
Looking at the gap between the trailer release dates for season one and two and their premier dates, it seems unlikely that the new season will drop until May at the earliest, since the trailer hasn’t yet been released.
Even if not until later in the year, it's likely we'll see news of a season three release in 2024. This being said, until we see an official announcement, we can’t say for certain.
There has been speculation as to whether the strike of the Writers Guild of America, which took place from May 2nd to September 27th 2023, may have delayed the production of The Legend of Vox Machina season three. However, since workers for the animation studio that produce the show, Titmouse, are represented by The Animation Guild, IATSE Local 839, this is unlikely.
Another cause for concern for upcoming The Legend of Vox Machina release dates has been the recent announcement that a new animated series based on Critical Role’s second campaign, The Mighty Nein, is on its way to our screens. Set to be produced by the same animation studio as its predecessor, once again in partnership with Critical Role and Amazon Studios, fans have been left wondering if the release dates of seasons of Mighty Nein may start to alternate with The Legend of Vox Machina.
We’ll certainly be watching out for announcements on the second animated addition to the Critical Role universe; whatever the release schedule looks like, it’s safe to say that Mighty Nein will be closely tied to The Legend of Vox Machina and any future animation projects undertaken by Critical Role.
It’s certainly reasonable to assume we’ll be saying ‘Bidet’ to our favourite eclectic band of misfits soon, although nothing is guaranteed.
Will There Be A Fourth Season?

Sam Riegel excited fans of The Legend of Vox Machina when he teased the show’s potential for future seasons in an interview with Variety:
“A lot more story to tell... We could go for five seasons — or more.”
While there hasn’t been an official announcement for a fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina, the show follows the plot of Critical Role’s first campaign. This concluded in 2017, so we have a fair idea of the themes and story arcs which are yet to appear.
Season two left the team of mercenaries part way through the Chroma Conclave arc. The Legend of Vox Machina has covered Arc One: Kraghammer & Vasselheim (although much of this was skipped excepting flashbacks) and Arc Two: The Briarwoods. This still leaves the completion of Arc Three: The Chroma Conclave, as well as Arc Four: Taryon Darrington and Arc Five: Vecna as potential and likely plot points for future seasons of the show.
Travis Willingham also hinted at the show’s future:
“Seasons 2 and 3 are setting up some of those endgame elements and start to reveal what the consequences of certain character choices will be within the story.”
While this doesn’t make any guarantees of additional seasons beyond what has already been announced, the idea that these seasons are ‘setting up’ something bigger is promising.
It’s clear that the content for several future seasons exists and The Legend of Vox Machina’s popularity with an established and growing fanbase means it’s very likely that the show will continue.
It’s an exciting time for The Legend of Vox Machina; we’ve had two strong seasons and there’s great potential for future storylines.
What’s Next? Mighty Nein & Beyond

Critical Role and Amazon Studios announced plans to bring Mighty Nein to our screens on January 25th 2023.
Set two decades after the events of The Legend of Vox Machina, this new series will follow the characters from Critical Role’s second campaign and their adventures in Wildemount, another one of the continents of Exandria.
You can watch the official teaser here.
Fans are buzzing to see another of their favourite campaigns brought to life – and with Bells Hells, Critical Role’ s third campaign, still ongoing, we can be sure that there is plenty more content for them to adapt in the future.
We know one thing for certain: there’s lots more to come from Critical Role.
